In 1982, Israeli authorities released 28 wild donkeys into the Ramon Crater, a vast desert depression in southern Israel, as part of an ecosystem restoration initiative. The experiment has yielded unexpected ecological benefits that have drawn international scientific attention.

The donkeys' natural grazing and movement patterns have proved instrumental in reshaping the harsh terrain. As they traverse the crater floor, their hooves create shallow depressions that trap and retain rainwater, forming critical waterholes that sustain desert wildlife during dry periods. These natural reservoirs have become vital oases for the region's fauna.

Beyond water management, the animals have inadvertently become seed dispersers. Their droppings contain acacia seeds that germinate in the nutrient-rich deposits, promoting the growth of trees and vegetation across previously barren areas. This natural cycle of nutrient distribution has accelerated the greening of the crater landscape.

Four decades after their introduction, the wild donkey population has contributed to a measurable shift in the Ramon Crater's ecology. What was once a largely lifeless expanse has evolved into a functioning ecosystem capable of supporting diverse plant and animal life, demonstrating how indigenous species can restore degraded desert environments through their biological processes.
