Wild Elephants Use Medicinal Plants to Heal Themselves and Offspring

Research demonstrates that wild elephants possess sophisticated knowledge of medicinal plants and deliberately consume them to treat ailments and boost their calves' health. The behaviour adds to growing evidence of self-medication practices across the animal kingdom.

Wild elephants in their natural habitats actively seek out and consume specific plants with medicinal properties, a practice that benefits both themselves and their young, according to observations by wildlife researchers. The elephants appear to have developed an intuitive understanding of which vegetation can address various health concerns, selecting particular plants and preparing them in ways that maximize their therapeutic value.

Mother elephants have been documented preparing nutritious plant-based "smoothies" for their calves, mixing medicinal vegetation to support immune function and overall development. These preparations suggest a level of parental care and health awareness previously underestimated in elephant populations.

The phenomenon falls under zoopharmacognosy, a scientific term describing self-medication behaviours observed across multiple animal species. Apes and various bird species have similarly demonstrated the ability to identify and consume plants for medicinal purposes, indicating that such behaviour may be more widespread in the animal kingdom than traditionally recognized.

Wildlife experts emphasize that these observations highlight the complex cognitive abilities of elephants and their sophisticated understanding of their environment. The findings underscore the importance of preserving natural habitats that provide elephants access to diverse plant species essential for their health and survival.
