Wildlife authorities capture long-tailed macaque after child attack in Zamboanga del Sur

PAGADIAN CITY — The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) – Ramon Magsaysay has taken custody of a Philippine long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis philippensis) following an attack on a child in Barangay Upper Pulacan, Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur.
Environmental authorities responded to a resident report and successfully retrieved the primate on August 25. The incident marks renewed concern over wildlife encounters in residential areas across the region, where expanding human settlements increasingly overlap with natural habitats.
The Philippine long-tailed macaque is a native primate species found throughout the country. Authorities did not immediately disclose details regarding the child's condition or the circumstances surrounding the attack. The captured macaque is now under the care of CENRO officials pending further assessment and appropriate placement.
