A collaborative operational framework has been established by the Department of Wildlife Conservation in partnership with Sri Lanka's military and security forces to strengthen protections for the nation's elephant populations and reduce incidents of conflict between humans and wildlife.
The initiative emerged from high-level discussions held between senior officials from the Department of Wildlife Conservation and representatives of the Tri-Forces, alongside other relevant stakeholders. The joint operations room will serve as a central coordination hub for deploying resources and implementing protective measures across regions where elephant populations are concentrated.
The mechanism addresses a persistent challenge facing Sri Lanka, where encroachment into natural habitats and competing resource demands have intensified encounters between elephants and human settlements. The structured approach aims to employ the specialized capabilities of both civilian wildlife management experts and military personnel to monitor elephant movements, prevent poaching, and respond rapidly to emergencies.
Official sources indicated that the partnership represents a comprehensive strategy combining law enforcement, habitat management, and inter-agency coordination. The initiative underscores the government's commitment to safeguarding Sri Lanka's iconic wildlife while protecting rural communities from potential dangers posed by wild elephant populations in close proximity to populated areas.
