Winter arrives: Five essential maintenance steps before storing coolers
As temperatures drop across India, householders are advised to perform critical maintenance on air coolers before seasonal storage. Proper upkeep prevents odour, mould growth, and equipment degradation during the winter months.

With winter settling in across much of India, the annual ritual of shutting down coolers until summer arrives requires careful attention to maintenance protocols. Neglecting proper care during the off-season can result in foul odours, bacterial growth, and reduced cooling efficiency when the devices are reactivated.
Experts recommend five key maintenance procedures before packing coolers away. First, drain all accumulated water from the tank, as stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and moulds that generate persistent odours. Second, thoroughly clean the interior and exterior surfaces, removing dust and debris that can corrode metal components and reduce airflow efficiency.
Third, inspect and clean the cooling pads, which tend to accumulate mineral deposits and impurities over months of use. Fourth, ensure all components are completely dry before storage to prevent rust formation and fungal growth. Finally, store the cooler in a dry, well-ventilated location, ideally covering it with a breathable material to shield it from dust while allowing moisture to escape.
Following these preparatory steps ensures coolers remain in optimal working condition throughout the dormant season and are ready for immediate deployment when summer returns, extending the lifespan of the equipment and maintaining its cooling performance.
