Winter waste burning in cities generates pollution levels three times higher than during summer months, according to research findings that highlight the seasonal nature of India's air quality crisis.

The World Resources Institute India study attributes the winter surge to a combination of meteorological factors and human behavior. Colder months bring weaker wind speeds and more stable atmospheric conditions, while temperature inversions—layers of warm air that trap cooler air beneath—prevent pollutants from dispersing upward into the atmosphere.

Beyond natural atmospheric conditions, the research indicates that increased waste burning during winter is partly driven by its use as a heating source, in addition to seasonal waste disposal practices. As temperatures drop, the practice becomes both a waste management and survival strategy in many urban areas across the country.

The findings underscore the complexity of India's winter pollution problem, which typically peaks between October and February. While vehicular emissions and industrial activity remain constant year-round, the seasonal spike from biomass and waste burning, combined with unfavorable weather patterns, creates a compounding effect on air quality during colder months.

The research suggests that addressing winter pollution requires targeted interventions during specific seasons, including alternative heating solutions and stricter waste management protocols during high-risk months.
