A woman has been arrested in Prayagraj on charges of blackmailing a senior railway officer in Jhansi using AI-generated objectionable images, according to police officials. The 27-year-old suspect created synthetic photographs depicting the railway official and repeatedly demanded money from him and his family members.
The extortion campaign escalated on July 31 when the accused sent an AI-generated image to the officer and his family, demanding 15 lakh rupees in payment. She simultaneously threatened to circulate morphed photographs of female members of the officer's household across social media platforms if her demands were not met.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had engaged in a pattern of continuous monetary demands against the railway official over an extended period. Law enforcement authorities apprehended the woman following a formal complaint filed by the victim's family.
The case highlights growing concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence technology for criminal purposes, particularly in extortion and blackmail schemes across northern India. Authorities have registered charges under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and are continuing their investigation into the matter.
