MANILA — Authorities in Quezon City have apprehended a woman suspected of orchestrating a theft at a local supermarket using a distraction technique involving complimentary household items.
The suspect, who reportedly has a decade-long history of theft-related offenses throughout Metro Manila, allegedly approached a shopper around 10 a.m. offering free tissues and vinegar. While the victim's attention was diverted by the promotional items, the suspect is accused of stealing the shopper's wallet.
The arrest marks another development in ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address theft crimes in commercial establishments across the capital region. Investigators said the suspect's modus operandi relied on the victim's momentary distraction during the purported giveaway.
The case underscores vulnerabilities in crowded shopping environments where such tactics continue to be employed by serial offenders. Police have included the incident in their broader campaign against retail theft in Metro Manila.
