Woman detained at Colombo airport over gold smuggling attempt
Customs officials at Bandaranaike International Airport have arrested a 38-year-old woman accused of attempting to bring nearly one kilogramme of gold into Sri Lanka from Dubai without declaration.

The woman was apprehended during routine screening procedures at the airport's arrival terminal on suspicion of smuggling 916 grammes of gold in contravention of Sri Lanka's customs regulations.
Authorities said the precious metal was discovered during baggage inspection and subsequent body search. The passenger, whose identity has not been disclosed, is believed to have attempted to bypass customs declaration requirements for the high-value cargo.
The seizure marks the latest in a series of gold smuggling attempts intercepted at the country's main international airport. Officials have intensified screening measures in recent months as illicit precious metal trafficking through the facility has remained a persistent concern.
The suspect is currently in custody pending further investigation. Officials have not yet disclosed whether formal charges will be filed or what penalties may apply under Sri Lanka's customs and excise laws governing the illegal importation of gold and other restricted items.
