A 30-year-old woman was assaulted at the base of Govardhan hill in Mathura while performing a ritual circumambulation of the sacred site on Tuesday. According to reports, an unknown man approached the woman demanding alms during her pilgrimage. When she did not comply with his request, the assailant allegedly attacked her, causing serious facial injuries.
The woman, identified as Monica, was completing the Govardhan Parikrama—a traditional circumambulatory pilgrimage around the holy hill sacred to Hindu devotees—when the incident took place. The assault prompted immediate concern among pilgrims at the site, one of the most visited religious destinations in Uttar Pradesh.
Local authorities have registered the case and launched an investigation to identify and locate the perpetrator. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though initial reports suggest the assailant may have been motivated by the woman's refusal to provide money. The woman has been receiving medical attention for her injuries.
Government officials have said they are reviewing security arrangements at the pilgrimage site to prevent similar incidents in the future.
