Woman's nature preserve threatened by major sewer infrastructure project

A Kentucky woman's decades-long conservation project has been upended by a major public infrastructure initiative. The property owner had spent 35 years transforming her 45-acre holding into a natural area, with plans to formalize its protection through the Boone Conservancy. Those plans now face significant obstacles following the approval of easements for a sewer development project valued at nearly $40 million.

Local authorities granted the utility company, identified as SD1, rights to acquire seven easements across the property using eminent domain powers. A regional court subsequently upheld the utility's acquisition, clearing the legal path for the infrastructure work to proceed across the conservation land.

The court's decision prompted swift reaction from area residents. Neighbors of the property voiced opposition to the project's routing, leading Boone County officials to request that SD1 provide justification for its chosen route. The utility company has not yet publicly detailed the technical or engineering considerations that drove its selection of this particular corridor for the sewer line expansion.
