Woodlands Checkpoint opens dedicated motorcycle lanes with facial recognition

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has designated specific departure lanes at the Woodlands Checkpoint for two-wheeled vehicles and their riders, marking an effort to streamline cross-border traffic flow. The initiative takes effect from October 15 and represents an expansion of automated clearance procedures at Singapore's busiest land border crossing.

The new lanes will employ facial recognition technology to automatically process travellers, reducing the need for manual document checks and accelerating the clearance process. This automated system aligns with Singapore's broader digitalisation efforts at border control points and aims to reduce congestion during peak travel periods.

The move is expected to benefit regular commuters and travellers who cross the Causeway on motorcycles and scooters. By dedicating specific lanes to two-wheeled vehicles, authorities aim to improve traffic management efficiency while maintaining security standards.

The Woodlands Checkpoint, which connects Singapore to Johor Bahru in Malaysia, processes hundreds of thousands of travellers daily. The introduction of dedicated motorcycle lanes with automated processing represents a targeted approach to managing the diverse range of vehicles and passenger types crossing the border.
