Work-from-home policies may not shield workers from air pollution risks
As Indian cities grapple with severe air quality, employers are adopting work-from-home arrangements to protect staff. However, experts warn that indoor spaces offer limited protection unless properly sealed and filtered.

With air pollution reaching hazardous levels across major Indian cities, many organisations have implemented work-from-home policies as a protective measure for employees. The approach assumes that remaining indoors provides a shield against outdoor pollutants, but environmental health specialists caution that this assumption requires significant qualification.
Indoor air quality cannot be taken for granted simply because structures have walls and windows, according to air quality researchers. Outdoor pollutants penetrate indoor environments through multiple pathways: open windows and doors, ventilation systems, and gaps around building fixtures. In most residential and office spaces lacking specialised air filtration systems, outdoor air quality directly influences the air people breathe indoors.
The effectiveness of staying indoors depends heavily on infrastructure. Buildings with modern HEPA filtration systems, sealed windows, and properly maintained ventilation can substantially reduce indoor pollutant concentrations. However, many Indian homes and offices lack such advanced systems, making them susceptible to outdoor air pollution levels.
Experts recommend that work-from-home arrangements be coupled with additional protective measures. These include using air purifiers with HEPA and activated carbon filters, maintaining sealed windows during high pollution episodes, and monitoring indoor air quality through available apps and devices. Individuals should also consider N95 or N99 masks when venturing outdoors during severe pollution events.
While remote work reduces commuting exposure and outdoor time, it should not be considered a complete solution to air pollution health risks. A comprehensive approach combining workplace policies, personal protective equipment, and improved indoor air quality management offers the most effective protection during periods of severe air pollution.
