Worker groups slam govt's pre-Diwali benefits package as insufficient
Employee representatives have criticized the financial relief announced by the Union government ahead of Diwali, arguing that the measures fall short of worker expectations. Union leaders have called for a more substantial package, including merger of a portion of dearness allowance with basic pay.

Labour representatives have expressed disappointment with the financial benefits package unveiled by the central government in the run-up to the Diwali festival, contending that the announced measures are inadequate to address worker welfare concerns.
Employee groups have specifically flagged the government's approach to dearness allowance (DA) administration, arguing that when the allowance reaches the 50 per cent mark, it should be merged into basic pay rather than maintained as a separate component. This structural change would provide workers with enhanced job security and improved pension calculations, representatives claimed.
The criticism comes as the government traditionally announces special financial relief packages and bonuses for state employees and pensioners during the festive season. Worker unions have indicated that the current package does not sufficiently reflect the cost of living pressures faced by employees and does not align with earlier expectations for a more comprehensive relief measure.
The disagreement highlights ongoing tensions between employee representatives and the government over the adequacy of compensation structures and the treatment of allowances within salary frameworks. Labour organisations have signalled they may escalate their demands through formal channels if their concerns remain unaddressed.
