World Bank backs 13 billion taka banking sector reform initiative

The World Bank has committed funding worth approximately 13 billion taka to support a comprehensive banking sector reform programme in Bangladesh. The initiative represents a significant investment in modernising the country's financial infrastructure and addressing structural weaknesses within the banking system.

The reform project is designed to enhance regulatory frameworks, improve governance standards, and strengthen the operational capacity of banking institutions. By focusing on systemic improvements, the programme aims to create a more resilient financial sector capable of supporting Bangladesh's economic development objectives.

The financing will support capacity building across regulatory bodies and financial institutions, with particular emphasis on digital banking adoption, risk management systems, and compliance mechanisms. These measures are expected to increase efficiency while reducing financial vulnerabilities in the banking system.

Bankruptcy procedures and non-performing loan management are also expected to receive attention under the reform initiative. The World Bank's involvement underscores the international community's commitment to supporting Bangladesh's efforts to strengthen its financial sector and maintain macroeconomic stability.
