Ca Mau, Vietnam's southernmost province and a major fishing hub, has launched a comprehensive development program with World Bank support to modernize its fisheries sector over the 2026-2029 period. The initiative represents a significant commitment to upgrading the region's fishing infrastructure while addressing mounting pressures from climate change and environmental degradation.
The partnership will focus on three key areas: modernizing port facilities and fisheries infrastructure, introducing advanced technologies to improve catch quality and reduce waste, and strengthening management systems across the supply chain. These improvements are designed to enhance productivity while ensuring sustainable practices that protect marine ecosystems and support long-term industry viability.
The project also emphasizes Vietnam's broader development goals, including greater global economic integration and domestic digital transformation. By upgrading Ca Mau's fisheries capabilities, the initiative aims to position the province as a competitive player in regional seafood markets while maintaining environmental standards.
Climate adaptation remains central to the program's design. Coastal Ca Mau faces ongoing threats from rising sea levels and changing weather patterns, making the integration of climate-resilient practices essential for protecting both communities and livelihoods. The World Bank cooperation signals international recognition of these challenges and support for Vietnamese efforts to address them.
