Top-ranked Jannik Sinner announced his withdrawal from the US Open on Friday, unable to overcome a persistent right knee injury that has hampered his preparations since his triumph at Wimbledon last month. The Italian had hoped to defend his form after clinching his second consecutive title at the All England Club following a victory over Alexander Zverev.
Sinner's injury forced him to skip the hard-court warm-up tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati, key preparation events ahead of the US Open. In a statement posted on social media, the 25-year-old expressed his disappointment at the decision, noting that despite intensive work with his team and medical staff, recovery was taking longer than anticipated.
"Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year," Sinner wrote. "We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realized that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue."
Sinner acknowledged the emotional toll of missing the New York Grand Slam, describing the tournament as holding special significance for him. His absence from the US Open represents a significant development in the men's tennis calendar, with the world No. 1 joining a list of notable players sidelined by injuries in recent months.
