World on track for 2.8°C warming by century's end: UN

A fresh analysis from the United Nations reveals that even with full implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)—the climate pledges submitted by countries under the Paris Agreement—the world faces warming of approximately 2.6°C by 2100. If current policies remain unchanged and efforts do not intensify, the temperature increase could climb to 2.8°C, substantially exceeding the 1.5°C target established as critical to limiting catastrophic climate impacts.

The gap between pledged action and actual policy implementation presents a significant challenge to global climate goals. While the NDCs represent formal commitments from nations to reduce emissions, the UN assessment suggests these pledges are insufficient to prevent dangerous warming, particularly for vulnerable regions across South and Southeast Asia that face heightened risks from sea-level rise, extreme weather, and agricultural disruption.

The findings highlight the urgent need for enhanced climate action beyond current commitments. Policymakers across the region are under mounting pressure to strengthen emissions reduction targets and accelerate transitions toward renewable energy and sustainable development. For India and neighbouring nations already grappling with climate-related challenges, the report reinforces that more ambitious measures are essential to protect populations and economies from escalating climate risks.
