World Post Day marks global postal service anniversary today

World Post Day is observed annually on October 9, recognizing the vital role postal services play in global communication and commerce. The observance was officially designated during an international congress held in Tokyo in 1969, establishing a framework for marking the occasion each year.

The date itself holds historical significance, marking the anniversary of October 9, 1874, when representatives from postal administrations signed the treaty establishing the General Postal Union in Bern, Switzerland. This groundbreaking agreement laid the foundation for coordinated international mail delivery and eventually evolved into what is now known as the Universal Postal Union (UPU).

The UPU remains the primary intergovernmental organization governing international postal services, ensuring that mail can be reliably delivered across borders and continents. Member nations participate in the organization to maintain standards and facilitate the seamless exchange of correspondence and parcels.

World Post Day provides an opportunity for countries, postal operators, and communities to acknowledge the essential services postal workers provide. From traditional correspondence to parcels and financial services, postal networks continue to support both personal communication and economic activity across the region and beyond.
