Xi seeks to defuse US-China tensions as Trump administration takes office

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for enhanced cooperation between Beijing and Washington to circumvent conflict, asserting that China's continued economic and military development need not undermine American interests or global stability.

The Chinese leader's position represents a diplomatic effort to reset relations with the incoming Trump administration. President Trump responded favourably to the outreach, describing the bilateral relationship as important and worthy of constructive engagement. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has similarly underscored the value of dialogue with China despite longstanding concerns about Beijing's strategic intentions.

However, analysts and policy experts remain cautious about prospects for sustained cooperation. Critics point to China's accelerating military expansion, particularly modernisation of naval and missile capabilities, as evidence that competitive tensions will persist regardless of diplomatic messaging. The challenge facing both governments centres on what observers term the "Thucydides Trap"—the historical pattern whereby rising powers and established powers inevitably drift toward conflict.

Both capitals appear committed to testing whether managed engagement can succeed where confrontation has dominated recent years. The effectiveness of this approach will likely depend on whether structural economic and security interests can be reconciled through dialogue and mutual restraint.
