Yellowstone rangers collect over 20,000 trash items from geothermal zones

Park staff completed an extensive cleanup operation across Yellowstone's geothermal regions, collecting debris that included over 5,000 rocks and sticks deliberately placed by visitors, along with 280 abandoned hats. The cleanup effort also yielded currency totalling more than $18, suggesting visitors had tossed coins into hot springs and thermal features.

Among the more unusual discoveries were electronic devices including AirPods, as well as personal care items such as Invisalign retainers, inhalers, artificial nails and golf tees. The varied nature of recovered items highlights the challenge park management faces in maintaining geothermal attractions while managing visitor behaviour.

The removal operation underscores ongoing efforts by Yellowstone rangers to preserve the park's natural features and protect its delicate geothermal ecosystems. Park officials continue to educate visitors about responsible tourism practices and the environmental impact of leaving trash in sensitive areas.
