Yemen army claims heavy Houthi losses in 24-hour offensive

Yemen's government forces claimed significant battlefield gains on Monday, reporting that more than 1,500 Houthi fighters were killed or wounded in combat operations over the previous 24 hours. The figures could not be independently verified, though they point to an intensification of fighting between state-aligned troops and the Iran-backed militant group that controls much of northern Yemen.

In a concurrent operation, military units closed a key crossing between al-Houban, a Houthi stronghold, and Taiz city, which remains divided between government and opposition forces. Control of supply routes has proven strategically crucial in Yemen's protracted conflict, with both sides attempting to cut off enemy logistics and reinforce their respective positions.

The clashes represent the latest escalation in a civil war that has devastated Yemen's economy and triggered widespread humanitarian suffering. The closure of the crossing is likely to further restrict movement of goods and civilians between rival-held territories, complicating already dire conditions for the country's population.

Neither side in the conflict has provided independent evidence of casualty figures, and claims by warring parties are routinely contested. The United Nations and humanitarian organizations have documented extensive civilian casualties and displacement throughout the conflict, which has destabilized the Arabian Peninsula's most populous nation.
