Yemen's government launches military push against Houthi forces

Rashad al-Alimi, head of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, has directed government forces to commence military operations aimed at dislodging Houthi fighters from contested areas. The directive comes after the Iran-backed Houthis tightened their grip on Taiz, a strategically important city in southwestern Yemen, and severed main supply corridors serving the region.

The encirclement of Taiz has severely restricted the movement of humanitarian aid and commercial goods into the city, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis affecting its civilian population. The blockade represents a significant escalation in the ongoing territorial dispute between the internationally recognised government and the Houthi movement, which controls much of Yemen's populated north.

The military operation signals the government's determination to restore territorial control and reopen critical supply lines. However, the Houthis have demonstrated considerable resilience in previous confrontations, controlling densely populated areas where military operations risk civilian casualties.

Yemen has been embroiled in conflict for nearly a decade, with the Houthis gaining substantial territorial and military capabilities despite international intervention. The humanitarian situation remains dire, with millions of Yemenis dependent on aid delivery through contested regions.
