In a direct political challenge, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has invited Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav to contest from Ayodhya, offering to fight the election head-to-head without relying on party nominees or intermediaries.
Addressing a gathering, Adityanath suggested that both leaders should file their nomination papers from the same constituency and test their political fortunes directly. "Why should we fight through disciples? You file your nomination from Ayodhya, and I will too. Let us both try our luck once," the Chief Minister said, according to reports.
The challenge reflects intensifying political rivalry between the two leaders ahead of elections in Uttar Pradesh. Adityanath, who has represented Gorakhpur, and Yadav, the principal opposition leader in the state, have emerged as the focal points of the ongoing political contest.
The Samajwadi Party has not immediately responded to the challenge. However, the statement underscores the personal dimension that electoral competition in Uttar Pradesh has increasingly assumed, with both camps focusing on direct confrontation rather than traditional party-based contest frameworks.
Ayodhya, the site of the Ram Mandir, holds significant political symbolism in Uttar Pradesh and has been a key constituency in recent electoral contests. The Chief Minister's choice of the city for his challenge carries considerable political messaging.
