Yogi Targets Gandhi Family Over Independence Struggle Narrative

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated a memorial to Mahasay Masuriya Din Passi, a prominent independence activist, at an event in Uttar Pradesh. During the ceremony, Adityanath highlighted the contributions of lesser-known freedom fighters to India's struggle against British rule.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister contended that the narrative around India's independence movement had been narrowly focused. "It was not only Jawaharlal Nehru who went to jail for the country's freedom," Adityanath said, drawing an implicit contrast with the Gandhi family's role in post-independence politics.

Adityanath pointed to Masuriya Din Passi's extensive imprisonment as evidence of widespread sacrifice by freedom fighters beyond those commonly highlighted in popular accounts. The Chief Minister's comments appeared directed at opposition leaders, particularly the Congress party, over their portrayal of the independence movement.

The unveiling of Passi's statue is part of efforts by the Uttar Pradesh government to recognize regional and grassroots figures in India's freedom struggle. Such initiatives have become increasingly common as political parties seek to highlight diverse contributions to independence beyond the mainstream narrative.
