Young Assam elephant Durga headed to Madurai temple amid welfare concerns

A young elephant named Durga from Assam is among five pachyderms proposed for transfer to prominent temples across Tamil Nadu, marking a significant wildlife relocation effort in southern India. The transfers are intended for the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, the Arunachaleswarar Temple in Tiruvannamalai, the Kancheepuram Mutt, the Vaitheeswaran Temple in Mayiladuthurai, and the Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram.

The proposed transfers have sparked concern among animal welfare advocates, who have raised questions regarding the conditions under which the elephants will be kept and their overall wellbeing following relocation. The movement of the animals represents a significant logistical and welfare undertaking, as the elephants would be transported from the northeastern region to multiple temple locations across Tamil Nadu.
