Young elephant calf to receive specialist care at Udawalawe sanctuary

The Department of Wildlife Conservation has coordinated the movement of the young elephant calf to the Udawalawe sanctuary, where dedicated elephant care facilities are operational. The decision to relocate Thal-etaya follows an assessment of the animal's current health condition and available treatment resources.

Udawalawe National Park, located in the southern part of the island, is home to one of Sri Lanka's largest concentrations of wild elephants and operates an elephant transit home facility. The sanctuary has previously handled similar cases of young elephants requiring intensive veterinary intervention and rehabilitation.

Specialist veterinarians at Udawalawe will provide comprehensive medical evaluation and ongoing treatment for the calf. The facility offers appropriate accommodation and monitoring systems designed specifically for young elephants recovering from health complications.

The relocation represents part of ongoing wildlife management efforts in Sri Lanka to ensure the wellbeing of animals in the country's protected areas. Officials overseeing the transfer have confirmed that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure the calf's safe transportation and continued care throughout the treatment period.
