Young elephant shows encouraging signs of recovery after Medawachchiya incident

The young pachyderm, which had remained immobilized on the ground for several days, is recovering under the supervision of wildlife officials. Initial treatment was provided by the Pandulagama Veterinary Unit of the Department of Wildlife, which assessed the calf's condition and initiated therapeutic measures.

The Ministry of Environment confirmed that the animal has since been transferred to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, a specialized facility equipped to provide ongoing care and rehabilitation. The transit home has established protocols for treating distressed elephants and monitoring their recovery progress.

The incident highlights ongoing efforts by Sri Lankan wildlife authorities to respond to cases involving vulnerable animals. Officials did not provide specific details regarding the cause of the calf's initial condition or the precise nature of treatment administered.

The Udawalawe facility, located in the southern lowveld region, serves as a rehabilitation center for orphaned and injured elephants, with capacity to support multiple animals simultaneously during recovery phases.
