Sophia Parekh began her book distribution project at just seven years old during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns, transforming it into a sustained initiative that has now reached thousands of young readers. The Westfield, New Jersey resident personally curates book selections based on individual children's ages, reading levels, and interests, ensuring that each recipient receives titles tailored to their needs.
The 12-year-old's commitment to fostering a love of reading extends beyond individual distribution efforts. Through Sophia's Book Stand, she has also partnered with educators working in under-resourced schools, providing crucial support to teachers navigating limited literacy resources in their classrooms.
Her dedication to improving access to books for disadvantaged children has not gone unnoticed. Parekh was named a runner-up for the 2026 Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes, an annual recognition programme that celebrates young people making a positive impact in their communities and the world.
The initiative demonstrates how young people from immigrant backgrounds are contributing meaningfully to social causes, with Parekh's efforts addressing the persistent challenge of unequal access to educational resources across the United States.
