Young Indians View Israel Defence Ties Above US, France: Survey

A pan-Indian survey of Generation Z has identified what researchers describe as a "perceptible recalibration in generational awareness" regarding India's international alliances, with Israel emerging as a priority defence partner among young adults aged 18-29.

According to findings released by the India Israel Centre, the Jewish state now ranks among India's top five diplomatic partners in the eyes of Gen Z respondents, and crucially, places third in defence cooperation rankings—ahead of longstanding allies the United States and France. The shift reflects changing perceptions of India's most reliable strategic partners among the youth demographic.

The survey data presents a striking picture of this generational divide. Some 52 percent of Gen Z respondents rated India-Israel defence ties as robust, placing the bilateral relationship on par with Russia. France garnered support from 51 percent of respondents, while the United States trailed at 46 percent. Additionally, 41 percent of survey participants identified Israel as among India's key diplomatic partners.

The India Israel Centre attributed this perception shift partly to evolving cultural narratives and media consumption patterns among young Indians. Podcasts, popular culture references, and other contemporary media formats have increasingly highlighted Israel's technical contributions to Indian defence capabilities, including the supply of advanced laser-guided munitions and surveillance systems to Indian armed forces. These awareness campaigns appear to have measurably influenced how Gen Z evaluates India's international security relationships.
