Archishman Dey, an eighth-grade student from Ohio, conducted a systematic investigation into how everyday household activities contribute to indoor air pollution, specifically measuring PM2.5 particulate matter levels across five common sources. His testing encompassed an air fryer, scented candle, humidifier, natural gas appliance, and incense stick—all routinely used in homes across the region.
The study revealed that incense burning produced the highest average PM2.5 concentrations, with air fryer use registering as the second most significant contributor to indoor particulate pollution. The findings underscore the often-overlooked impact of seemingly benign household practices on air quality within living spaces.
Dey's research initiative was driven by personal motivation, stemming from concerns about asthma affecting his grandparents. His investigation highlights the potential health implications of indoor air quality for vulnerable populations, particularly those with respiratory conditions.
Through his findings, the young researcher hopes to raise awareness among families about the importance of monitoring and improving indoor air quality.
