YSRCP leaders confined amid tensions as local body nominations begin
Andhra Pradesh authorities placed several YSR Congress Party leaders under house arrest in Kadapa district as nominations opened for local body elections. The move came as reports emerged of political violence, including an alleged arson attack on a party candidate's motorcycle in neighbouring Tirupati district.

Multiple YSRCP leaders were restricted to their residences in Kadapa district on Monday, the first day of nominations for Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) and Municipal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) elections. The preventive detention measure was implemented as electoral authorities sought to maintain order during the nomination filing process.
The administrative action reflects mounting tensions ahead of the local body polls, which are expected to serve as a political barometer for the regional opposition party. The YSRCP, which lost power in the 2024 state assembly elections, has been actively campaigning for the grassroots-level contests.
Incidents of political violence have already surfaced during the nomination period. In Thottambedu mandal of Tirupati district, a motorcycle belonging to a YSRCP candidate was allegedly set ablaze, according to reports. The incident underscores the charged political atmosphere surrounding the local body elections.
Electoral officials have not publicly disclosed the specific grounds cited for the preventive detention orders, though such measures are typically invoked when authorities anticipate potential law and order disturbances. The restrictions came as candidates rushed to file their nominations before the deadline, with multiple parties competing for control of local government bodies across the state.
