Opposition leader Anantha Venkatarami Reddy has launched a scathing critique of the Andhra Pradesh government's handling of the El Niño-induced drought affecting Anantapur district, warning of a humanitarian crisis in the region.
The undivided Anantapur district confronts a convergence of water-related emergencies, with acute shortages affecting drinking water supplies, irrigation systems, and availability of animal fodder for pastoral communities. The crisis has been exacerbated by diminished agricultural activity during the previous Kharif season, further depleting fodder reserves across the drought-prone region.
Reddy's intervention reflects growing concerns among opposition parties over the state's disaster management response as El Niño weather patterns continue to impact rainfall across South India. Anantapur has historically remained vulnerable to cyclical droughts, with the current conditions threatening both rural livelihoods and water security.
The region's agricultural economy, heavily dependent on monsoon rains and groundwater reserves, faces mounting pressure as local water tables deplete.
