YSRCP withdraws from Punganur civic polls after TDP clashes

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has decided to boycott the ongoing Punganur Municipality elections in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district, marking a significant setback for the opposition party in the civic body contest.

The announcement follows escalating tensions between YSRCP and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) workers, which culminated in clashes during the first day of nominations. The confrontation prompted police to register multiple cases against YSRCP leaders and activists involved in the incident.

Key YSRCP figures, including Peddireddi and Midhun Reddy, have been reportedly instructed to stay away from Punganur town, effectively signalling the party's withdrawal from active participation in the municipal polls. The directive underscores the party's inability to ensure the safety of its cadre and leadership in the constituency.

The Punganur civic body election has emerged as a flashpoint for TDP-YSRCP competition in the post-2024 political realignment in Andhra Pradesh. The YSRCP's exit from the contest leaves the TDP and other contenders with a relatively clearer path in the municipal body polls.
