Zaheer Khan named Chennai Super Kings head coach for IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings announced the appointment of Zaheer Khan as head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season on Monday, bringing an end to Stephen Fleming's 18-year tenure with the franchise. The legendary pacer will take over the reins of the five-time IPL champions ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Zaheer, who will turn 48 next year, brings extensive international cricket experience to the role. The former India speedster featured in 92 Test matches, 200 one-day internationals and 17 Twenty20 internationals for the country. He was instrumental in India's 2011 World Cup campaign, claiming 21 wickets during the tournament—the highest tally by any bowler in that edition.

Flemi announced his departure from CSK in July of the previous year, concluding a highly successful association with the Chennai-based outfit. The New Zealand veteran had established CSK as one of the IPL's most consistent performers during his time with the franchise.

According to reports, CSK's cricket management committee—comprising franchise icon MS Dhoni, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and owner Rupa Gurunath—preferred an Indian coach for the position. Zaheer's most recent role saw him serve as head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants during the 2024 IPL season.
