KUALA LUMPUR — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has reminded Malaysian motorsport enthusiasts of their obligation to adhere to the laws and regulations of countries they visit, underscoring the importance of responsible behaviour abroad.
The call comes after a recent incident in Hat Yai, Thailand, where Malaysian bikers were summoned by local authorities, prompting diplomatic discussions between the two neighbouring nations.
Zahid emphasised that Malaysian citizens engaging in motorcycle activities or other recreational pursuits while overseas must familiarise themselves with and respect local legal frameworks to avoid complications and protect Malaysia's international reputation.
The remarks reflect broader concerns about ensuring that Malaysian travellers maintain positive relations with host countries while pursuing their hobbies and interests. Authorities have stressed the importance of responsible citizenship, particularly when activities involve large groups or high-visibility events that may draw official attention.
The incident highlights the need for clear communication between Malaysian travellers and relevant authorities regarding organised rides or gatherings in neighbouring countries, officials said.
