Zahid pledges institutional independence if BN regains federal power

KUALA LUMPUR — Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Wednesday committed to safeguarding the independence of Malaysia's judicial system and government institutions if the Barisan Nasional coalition is returned to power.
Addressing delegates at Umno's general assembly, Zahid underscored the necessity of maintaining institutional autonomy, signalling the coalition's intention to operate within constitutional frameworks and respect the separation of powers that underpins democratic governance.
The statement comes as BN seeks to rebuild public confidence following periods of political turbulence. Zahid's assurances appear aimed at addressing concerns about the proper functioning of courts and administrative bodies, matters that have drawn heightened public scrutiny in recent years.
The Umno president's remarks reflect broader discussions within Malaysian politics about institutional governance and the role of check-and-balance mechanisms in the country's political system. BN, which governed Malaysia for over six decades until 2018, is positioning itself as a stabilising force ahead of potential elections.
