SAN ANTONIO, ZAMBALES — An oily substance spotted along the shoreline of San Salvador Island in Masinloc town early Sunday triggered an immediate response from local residents and members of the community's "bantay dagat" (sea patrol volunteers) initiative. The discovery reignited concerns about marine pollution in waters that have been the focus of sustained conservation efforts by the local population.

Edna "Beth" Sarmiento, 57, a leader among the volunteer sea patrol members, coordinated the initial containment response. The group's quick mobilization reflects their commitment to protecting the marine environment in an area designated for ecological preservation.
