SAN ANTONIO, Zambales — Provincial authorities in Zambales have implemented a two-month price freeze on essential commodities in response to a calamity declaration triggered by severe weather conditions affecting the region. The Department of Trade and Industry regional office announced the measure on Monday, citing the compounded effects of the enhanced southwest monsoon and tropical cyclones Luis and Maymay as justification for the price controls.
The decision to freeze prices on basic necessities aims to prevent price manipulation and inflation that typically follows natural disasters and weather emergencies. Essential goods subject to the freeze include food staples, cooking oil, and other items critical to household consumption during the recovery period.
Provincial officials designated the 60-day period to provide relief to residents as communities assess damage and rebuild following the back-to-back weather disturbances. The DTI-Zambales will oversee enforcement of the price freeze, with inspectors monitoring retail establishments to ensure compliance with the directive.
The calamity declaration enables the province to access emergency funds and request national government assistance for rehabilitation efforts. Authorities urged consumers to report any violations of the price freeze to local DTI offices.
