CANDELARIA, Zambales — Local government officials in this Zambales municipality have approved a four-day workweek arrangement for municipal staff, effective October 19, as a response to intensifying heat conditions and escalating fuel prices across the region.
Mayor Byron Jones E. Edquilang announced the measure through an official memorandum, citing the need to address operational challenges posed by extreme weather and transportation cost pressures. The initiative will include temporary work-from-home provisions for eligible government personnel, allowing municipal employees greater flexibility in fulfilling their duties.
The compressed schedule represents a strategic approach to managing municipal expenses while accounting for the physical toll of prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures during the traditional five-day workweek. Officials hope the arrangement will reduce fuel consumption and related transportation expenditures for both the local government and its workforce.
The policy aligns with broader efforts across the Philippines to implement flexible work arrangements during periods of severe weather and economic strain. Municipal governments in other regions have similarly explored alternative schedules to mitigate operational costs while maintaining service delivery to constituents.
