MANILA — Zamboanga del Norte 3rd District Representative Adrian Michael Amatong has called on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to take decisive action against mining operations in his constituency, signaling frustration with the agency's oversight.
"It is DENR, Department of Environment and Natural Resources. This is not the Department of Mining Companies," Amatong said in remarks directed at the environmental agency, emphasizing that resource management decisions should prioritize conservation rather than industry convenience.
The congressman's statement comes as a mining company reportedly prepares to launch operations in Gutalac, a municipality within his legislative district. Amatong's intervention suggests concerns about environmental impacts and regulatory compliance related to the planned activities.
The DENR is tasked with managing the Philippines' natural resources and enforcing environmental laws. Mining operations in the country typically require multiple permits and environmental clearances before proceeding, though enforcement and monitoring of conditions remain contentious issues in resource-rich regions.
