PAGADIAN CITY — Provincial authorities in Zamboanga del Sur have moved to shield local hog producers from volatile market conditions by establishing a floor price for live swine and pork products. Gov. Divina Grace Yu issued an executive order setting minimum buying prices following consultations with representatives from the livestock and pork production sectors.
The pricing mechanism aims to provide stability for farmers facing sustained pressure from low farmgate prices, a situation compounded by ongoing concerns about African swine fever in the region. Industry stakeholders were engaged in developing the price structure to ensure the measure reflects production costs while remaining viable for buyers.
The floor price initiative represents one of several interventions by the provincial government to support hog producers amid disease threats and market uncertainties. Officials have indicated the measure will remain in effect pending further review of market conditions and the ASF situation.
Zamboanga del Sur remains a significant hog-producing region in Mindanao, with the livestock sector serving as an important income source for local farmers. The provincial government said it will monitor compliance with the new pricing framework and coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure its effective implementation.
