PAGADIAN CITY — The local government distributed 11,000 kilograms of seaweed propagules to 25 fisherfolk beneficiaries in Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur, marking a fresh push to revitalize coastal farming in the region.
The formal handover took place on Tuesday in Barangay Poblacion, organized by government agricultural agencies seeking to diversify income sources among fishing communities. The seedlings represent a significant boost to local aquaculture operations, which have faced mounting pressures from declining fish stocks and market volatility.
Seaweed farming has emerged as a viable livelihood alternative for coastal communities in Mindanao, offering faster crop cycles and lower startup costs compared to traditional fishing. The crop can be cultivated in shallow waters using simple farming techniques, making it accessible to small-scale operators.
Local officials indicated the initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable resource management while enhancing food security and household incomes across Zamboanga del Sur's fishing settlements.
