PAGADIAN CITY — Air quality monitoring stations in the Zamboanga Peninsula registered unhealthy pollution levels Tuesday as smoke from burning forests and agricultural land in Indonesia's Kalimantan province blanketed the region. The Environmental Management Bureau-Region 9 (EMB-9) documented the deterioration in air conditions across multiple locations throughout the day.

Reading taken at the Particulate Matter Station operated by Western Mindanao State University at its San Ramon Campus in Barangay Talisayan, Zamboanga City indicated elevated concentrations of air pollutants, reflecting the impact of transboundary smoke drifting westward across the Celebes Sea.

The haze episodes periodically affect the Philippines' southern regions, particularly during the dry season when agricultural burning and forest clearing intensify across the Indonesian archipelago. Environmental officials have recommended that residents in affected areas limit outdoor activities and use protective masks to reduce health risks associated with particulate matter exposure.
