MANILA – Security vulnerabilities at Ateneo de Zamboanga University came under scrutiny Thursday when Zamboanga Police Chief PCol. Fidel Fortaleza Jr. flagged the institution's lack of comprehensive vehicle screening procedures.
Fortaleza raised the concerns during a Senate committee on women and children hearing examining the circumstances surrounding a shooting incident at the university campus. The incident, which occurred Tuesday, involved a Grade 8 student who opened fire on the premises.
The police chief's assessment pointed to insufficient protocols governing the inspection of vehicles entering the university grounds, suggesting the security gaps may have contributed to the incident or highlighted weaknesses in campus safety measures.
The Senate inquiry is examining the circumstances that allowed the shooting to occur and is expected to evaluate broader security issues at educational institutions across the country.
