Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant switches to emergency generators amid power disruptions
Ukraine's largest nuclear facility has activated backup power systems following fresh damage to its external electrical connections. The recurring outages highlight the precarious situation at the Russian-controlled plant amid the ongoing conflict.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station shifted to emergency diesel generators on Wednesday after losing connection to the regional power grid, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported. The facility, located in southeastern Ukraine and currently under Russian military control, has experienced multiple power disruptions since Moscow's invasion began in February 2022.
Operators restored one of six external power lines by Thursday, according to IAEA updates, though the plant remained dependent on backup systems for primary power supply. The reliance on diesel generators presents significant operational challenges, as fuel supplies must be continuously replenished and generator reliability is subject to maintenance constraints.
The nuclear complex has repeatedly faced precarious power situations throughout the conflict. Prior outages have raised international concerns about the facility's ability to maintain essential cooling systems for its reactors and spent fuel storage pools. The IAEA has maintained a presence at the site to monitor safety conditions and report on technical developments.
Ukrainian officials attributed the latest power loss to damage caused by Russian military activity, while Moscow has blamed Ukrainian forces for infrastructure destruction. The competing claims remain unverified, though the pattern of disruptions underscores the vulnerability of critical nuclear infrastructure in active conflict zones. International observers have urged both parties to protect the facility's power systems to prevent potential radiological incidents.
