Destry Damayanti

Governor — Bank Indonesia

About Destry Damayanti

Key facts Role: Governor Organisation: Bank Indonesia Country: Indonesia Sector: Central banking Headline figures: BI-Rate held at 5.75 per cent at her first rate meeting; term runs from 2026 to 2031 Destry Damayanti became the first woman to lead Bank Indonesia in its 73-year history at one of the most delicate moments in the central bank's recent past. Parliament confirmed her as governor on 1 September 2026, five weeks after Perry Warjiyo resigned midway through his second term. At the time, the rupiah was the worst-performing currency in emerging Asia, and investors were openly asking whether the bank could stay independent under President Prabowo Subianto. The role As governor, Destry chairs the Board of Governors that sets interest rates and monetary policy for Southeast Asia's largest economy. The board also sets macroprudential rules and payment-system policy. She now controls the bank's main instruments: the BI-Rate, currency intervention, and the incentives meant to draw foreign capital into rupiah assets. According to the Presidential Decree, her term runs from 2026 to 2031. She took the oath before the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on 2 September. The route to the top The route to the top was unusual. Perry resigned on 25 July 2026 and Destry, as senior deputy governor, stepped in as acting governor. On 10 August Prabowo put her forward as the sole candidate. Parliament's Commission XI held fit-and-proper tests on 26 and 27 August, and the full House approved her appointment at a plenary session on 1 September. Aida S. Budiman replaced her as senior deputy governor. The Jakarta Post reported that Prabowo's nephew, Deputy Governor Thomas Djiwandono, had been touted as a possible nominee, and that the choice was closely watched for signs of political interference. Fitch Ratings said her nomination reinforced "expectations of policy continuity" (The Jakarta Post, 1 September 2026). She takes over with the bank under unusual scrutiny. In June, parliament passed a bill that gave it a role in evaluating the bank's performance and made the bank responsible for economic growth, which is a priority for Prabowo. The Straits Times, citing Reuters, reported that Perry had clashed with the finance minister over growth strategy before he left. At her first appearance after the vote, Destry raised the bank's 2027 growth forecast to 5.2 to 6 per cent. The top of that range matches Prabowo's 2027 target. She also backed two contentious government policies: channelling strategic commodity exports through the sovereign fund Danantara, and tighter rules on keeping export earnings onshore. First rate decision Her first rate meeting as governor, on 22 and 23 September, held the BI-Rate at 5.75 per cent. The deposit facility stayed at 4.75 per cent and the lending facility at 6.50 per cent. The bank said the decision was consistent with stabilising the rupiah and keeping inflation within its target of 2.5 per cent, plus or minus one point, for 2026 and 2027. It also widened its hedging incentives to cover foreign direct investment and foreign bank loans as well as portfolio inflows. The rupiah stood at Rp17,855 to the dollar on 22 September. Destry is an economist with degrees from the University of Indonesia and Cornell University. According to her official Bank Indonesia profile, she was senior economic adviser to the British Ambassador to Indonesia from 2000 to 2003. She was then chief economist at Mandiri Sekuritas and later at Bank Mandiri, and served on the board of commissioners of the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS). She became senior deputy governor of Bank Indonesia in 2019 and was reappointed in 2024. Regional reach Her decisions carry well beyond Indonesia. Bank Indonesia now explicitly courts foreign portfolio money, direct investment and bank lending to support the currency. She has also said the bank will tighten supervision of large dollar purchases by banks and corporations. That makes her choice of policy mix (firm enough to defend the rupiah, supportive enough for a government set on growth) a test of how independent the region's central banks remain. What to watch: whether the rupiah steadies without further rate rises, how the bank handles parliament's new evaluation powers, and whether rate cuts come under pressure as the 6 per cent growth goal approaches. She ranks second because she has statutory control over money and credit in an economy of more than 280 million people, although concerns about central-bank independence cap her durability score.
