From 27 July she became Second Minister for Foreign Affairs and Second Minister for Home Affairs, according to the Prime Minister's Office. The two portfolios cover Singapore's external relations and its internal security. Within weeks the job tested her. On 4 September she announced that Chinese authorities had informed Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) that 52 Singaporean citizens had been arrested and detained in Guangxi after an operation against suspected pyramid-scheme activities. The Guangxi case Her handling of that case shows the balance her role requires. She said Singapore's embassy in Beijing and consulate-general in Guangzhou had made three visits to all 52 detainees. She said she had met the families of most of them. She also said the government "does not interfere in the judicial process and investigations of other countries, just as we expect foreign governments to respect our laws and legal process", while stressing that "due process should be accorded to our citizens", according to the MFA transcript. The role As a second minister, she works under the senior ministers who lead each ministry. At Home Affairs that is K Shanmugam, whom the same reshuffle made Senior Minister while keeping him as home affairs minister. In an interview with CNA on 2 September she set out her priorities. On home affairs, she named road safety as a priority, after Parliament passed amendments to the Road Traffic Act in August with stiffer penalties for serious offences and a new drug-driving offence. She also named drug addiction and rehabilitation, and the Yellow Ribbon programme for ex-offenders. On foreign affairs, she said she would keep building Singapore's links with North-east Asia, including China, and with South-east Asia, as Singapore prepares to chair ASEAN in 2027. She also warned that "all over the world we see external actors seeking to influence, and Singapore is not immune to that". Her pre-promotion diplomacy followed the same lines. As senior minister of state, she visited Washington in January 2026 to launch events marking 60 years of Singapore–US diplomatic relations, meeting mayors, US officials and members of Congress, the MFA said. She became minister of state in 2013 and senior minister of state in 2015. She has since served in finance, culture, trade and industry, and national development, and she remains deputy government whip. A President's Scholar, she spent more than a decade in the civil service before politics, including at the Ministry of Home Affairs from 2000 to 2003, where she worked on developing the Home Team concept, CNA reported. Party role She also leads the PAP Women's Wing, which she has chaired since 2022. At its conference on 26 September she said that Singapore, newly classed as a super-aged society, must help women "age well". She presented survey findings calling for more workplace support on menopause and flexible work, the Straits Times reported. What to watch: the outcome of the Guangxi detentions, her part in Singapore's ASEAN chairmanship in 2027, and the planned road-safety campaign.
